Mr. Magovern became involved in his profession when he got out of law school. His first job was with the General Counsel for the New York Foundling Hospital from 1971 to 1972. New York State started changing and recognized there were more than 50,000 children in the foster care system who were being “warehoused,” and started to pass laws to get these kids out of foster care. Many of the child care agencies in New York City at the time did not have attorneys who were familiar with the legislation. Together with his partner, Mr. Magovern undertook the representation of 14-15 different child care agencies doing all of their family court work. Throughout his career, every time he has brought parents and children together through adoption are his favorite moments.

Mr. Magovern prepared for a career in law by first earning a Bachelor of Arts from Manhattan College in 1968. He continued at Fordham University, receiving a JD in 1971. In 1972, he was admitted to practice in the state of New York, and a year after that gained admission to the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In 1981, Mr. Magovern was admitted to the United States Supreme Court, and he was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1986. He has been a partner at his firm since 1980. He is credited as a fellow and founding member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys.
