With more than 45 years of professional experience, Mr. Gurfein has been the founder and partner with Gurfein Douglas LLP since 2002. Prior to establishing this firm, he was principal at Richard A. Gurfein and Associates from 2001 to 2002, and he was a partner at Wiesen, Gurfein and Jenkins from 1982 to 2001 and Wiesen and Gurfein from 1978 to 1982. Earlier in his career, he was an associate at Mark B. Wiesen, PC from 1972 to 1978. Mr. Gurfein considers any case where Mr. Gurfein could make someone’s life better as a highlight of his career.
Mr. Gurfein began his career as a student at New York University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering in 1967. He continued his studies with Brooklyn Law School, earning a Juris Doctor in 1971. He has been admitted to practice in the states of New York and Massachusetts, as well as before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Mr. Gurfein grew up in an environment that fostered caring for people, and that is what he wanted to do. He knew he wanted to be a lawyer.
Throughout his career, Mr. Gurfein has been recognized for his contributions. He was named among the Top 100 Trial Lawyers by the National Trial Lawyers Association and as a Super Lawyer nine years in a row. The recipient of the Crown of Good Name award from the Institute of Jewish Humanities and the Top Verdicts and Settlements Award from New York Law Journal, he also holds a Top Legal Rating with Martindale Hubbell.
