James L. Purcell, Jr., a Partner at the Florida law firm of Stoneburner Berry Purcell & Campbell, P.A, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Lawyers for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of law and service.

Hailing from a family of lawyers, Mr. Purcell was raised with the values of justice, kindness, and honesty, and he has drawn upon those values in his life. Before entering the field of law, Mr. Purcell spent 13 years as an enlisted Marine, and considers his time in the Marine Corps to be the highlight of his career, and the part of his life that most shaped his professional future.  One of his proudest moments was finishing at the top of his platoon in boot camp, and being meritoriously promoted in boot camp, as it was by far the most difficult thing he’s ever done. Mr. Purcell truly believes that every Marine remains a Marine after discharge from the military, and acknowledges that his military service has positively affected and influenced his career and personal life. During his time in the Marine Corps, Mr. Purcell received numerous awards, including the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal (Second Award), the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the National Defense Ribbon,

The day after his discharge from the Marine Corps in November 1993, Mr. Purcell completed his degree with high honors from Charter Oak State College, and in January 1994, started his legal studies at the University of Florida College of Law, graduating with honors in August 1996.

Mr. Purcell practiced law in Florida with Mahoney Adams & Criser, P.A., upon his graduation, and subsequently has been a partner at Stoneburner Berry & Simmons, P.A., Akerman-Senterfitt, Stoneburner, Berry, Glocker, Purcell and Greenhut, P.A., Balch & Bingham, and, since 2015, has been a partner at Stoneburner Berry Purcell & Campbell, P.A. He enjoys being able to represent clients as well as mentor others and attributes his success to his upbringing as well as his service in the Marine Corps as both provided a solid foundation on which he has built his career.

Mr. Purcell’s father, James L. Purcell, Sr., a highly recognized and awarded attorney who practiced with Paul Weiss Rifkind and Garrison in New York for over 40 years, was the most influential person in Mr. Purcell’s legal career. Mr. Purcell’s father taught him that nothing is more important to a lawyer than honesty and a willingness to represent all clients with the same level of professionalism, no matter the size of the matter or the size of the client relationship.

Active in the field of law for over two decades, Mr. Purcell has been widely recognized. He has been retained the AV Preeminent Peer Review Rating with Martindale-Hubbell since 2002, has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America annually since 2006, was named Legal Elite by the Florida Trend Magazine in 2017, was named the Banking and Financing Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in 2014, among other accolades. He has been lauded with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and holds a membership with the Jacksonville Bar Association and the American Bar Association.

In addition to his professional success, Mr. Purcell is immensely grateful to his wife of 35 years, Ann Marie Purcell, who made numerous sacrifices that enabled him to have successful careers as a Marine and as an attorney.  He is very proud of his two daughters and his and son-in-law, and enjoys time with his two grandchildren (with a third due in August), and understands that the joy and happiness they bring to his life is also important to his success.

Mr. Purcell and his wife enjoy charitable causes. They have sponsored gifts for children with life-threatening illnesses at Wilson’s Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, sponsor less fortunate seniors every year for the holidays, and donate to a wide range of charitable organizations. He has served on Charitable Boards with the Wolfson’s Hospital Red Wagon organization, the Jacksonville Chapter of the MDA, and True Blue Navy Benefactors in Jacksonville.
